One of Benevides’ friends, also at the concert, told local press in November that they had been given water while they waited to enter the stadium.

T4F organizers said in a statement that the company “followed best practices,” complied with “all authorities’ requests” and “distributed thousands of bottles of water” to participants. TF4 also denied that it did not allow attendees to bring their own water to the concert.

TF4 also said that Benevides “was quickly treated by members of a rescue team and transported (to the hospital) by ambulance from the intensive care unit.”

“In our 40 years of business, this company has never experienced a tragic incident” like Benevides’ death due to extreme heat, T4F said.

The Rio de Janeiro prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal investigation. Police said in a statement on Wednesday that after analyzing the forensic report, “representatives of the company organizing the event will be called to testify.”

Benevides’ death shocked all of Brazil. He traveled for the first time by plane from the central-western region of the country to see his favorite singer.

In a statement posted to Instagram after the death, Swift said the case had left her “heartbroken.”

Benevides’ father, José Weiny Machado, told the G1 news site that “I never doubted that the cause of death was the heat.”
