“Active results of strengthening police cooperation between Korea and China”… positive review
The main culprit of the ‘Gangnam drug drink’ incident that occurred last April was repatriated to Korea seven months after being caught in China, and Chinese media highly praised it, calling it “an achievement that strengthened cooperation between Korean and Chinese police authorities.”
On the 28th, the state-run China Central (CC) TV reported that the Chinese police had recently transferred Mr. Lee (26), the main culprit of the ‘Gangnam drug drink incident’, to Korea.
The National Police Agency announced on the afternoon of the 26th that Mr. Lee, who was identified as the main culprit and leader of the drug drink incident, was forcibly repatriated through Incheon International Airport.
Mr. Lee is accused of holding a fake tasting event for middle and high school students at an academy in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul on April 3 and distributing drug drinks to 13 minors by disguising them as ‘concentration enhancing drinks’.
Afterwards, he was also accused of trying to extort money from the parents of students who drank drugs by threatening to report them to the police because their children had taken drugs.
After leaving for China in October last year, Mr. Lee was found to have stayed in China and conspired to commit the crime with domestic and foreign accomplices.
The police received a red notice from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) for Mr. Lee and activated a hotline with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security through the police station at the Embassy in China to track Mr. Lee. A working group from the National Police Agency visited the Chinese Ministry of Public Security in person on May 22 and delivered important clues regarding Mr. Lee.
CCTV evaluated that “Chinese police attach great importance to international crimes, such as drug crimes, and have strengthened cooperation with Interpol and other national police, especially with regard to crimes that violate the rights and interests of minors.”
He continued, “The fact that the Korean and Chinese police cooperated closely this time to track and transport the suspect in a timely manner demonstrates the faith and will of the police of both countries to attack international crimes.”
He added, “This issue is a positive result of strengthening cooperation between the two countries.”
