During childhood the disease goes unnoticed and only during puberty, around the age of 15, in the absence of menstruationdoctors begin to suspect its existence.

Fortunately, there are some solutions to this rare congenital anomaly which can be total or partial and which is striking one woman in 5,000.

here is the main characteristics and treatments about this health problem that is rarely talked about.

What is the condition in which women are born without a vagina or uterus called?

THE Vaginal or Müllerian agenesis or Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome “occurs when the vagina does not develop and it is possible that the uterus partially does or is absent.” This happens because, during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the so-called “Müllerian ducts” (later forming the vagina and uterus) do not develop in the fetus”, explains the Mayo Clinic in the USA.

Among the characteristics of vaginal agenesis is a shorter vagina, with no cervix at the end, or none at all (it is marked only by a slight indentation). it is also possible the uterus is missing or too small.

As for the ovaries, says the Mayo Clinic, “are usually fully developed and functional, but are located in an unusual location in the abdomen.” She adds that “sometimes, the pair of tubes through which eggs travel from the ovary to the uterus (Fallopian tubes) are underdeveloped or absent.”

In addition to occurring before birth, the vaginal agenesis it is linked to kidney and urinary tract problems; changes in bone development in the spine and wrists; hearing problems and congenital pathologies related to the heart, gastrointestinal tract and the growth of arms and legs.

Treatments cited by the Mayo Clinic include the use of a vaginal dilator which, after a while, can “create” a vagina. It is also possible to make a surgery. In both cases, this allows the woman to do so have vaginal sex.

Women who have no uterus or who have a small uterus they cannot get pregnant. But if your ovaries are healthy, it is possible to have a baby through in vitro fertilization gestational surrogacy (the embryo can be implanted in the uterus of another woman to carry the pregnancy to term).

Having a correct diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment, of course, you should consult a doctor.
