Five years ago, Danny was studying systems engineering. Light, fashion design. They both left university at 6pm and met by chance almost every day in the same subway station. Luz admired Danny’s “samurai” hairstyle. She found her attractive.

Their locked gazes crystallized into an encounter. Luz took the lead through Lisette, her partner at her house. She was the pawn who started the game. One day, Lisette approached Danny and told him that her friend found him interesting.

He, confused by both the statement and the idea that there was an intermediary between him and his mistress, asked her why she hadn’t told him in person.

Lisette explained that Luz was deaf. and that was why I had seen her point out many times. Immediately, Danny told the young woman acting as Cupid that the interest was mutual.

Danny and Luz started seeing each other during study breaks. He, with the help of Lisette (“interpreter” by hobby) and as a self-taught, learns and practices sign language. He started with the days, the numbers, the greetings. He wanted to know so he could communicate better with Luz.

He also took the second step. The bumanguesa invited Danny to spend a weekend on a farm with her and her parents. Three months later they were dating..

5 years later

On Christmas 2023, Gabriela, Danny’s sister, shared a video on X that changed their lives at least for a few days.

“I still believe in love because I saw my brother learn a whole language like sign language to be able to talk to the girl he liked and now, after 5 years, they will get married. Long live love, long live monogamy,” Gabriela wrote in the post.

In the clipping you can see Danny proposing to Luz. It happens right at the climax of Christmas Eve dinner, before the eyes of Luz’s family. She, excited, answers yes.

X burned for the emotional and tender moment. The video has accumulated more than 2.7 million viewsmore than 87 thousand “likes” and an overwhelming number of retweets and comments.

Luz, 30, had no idea that Danny, who is two years her senior, would propose to her on Christmas Eve.

“There were a lot of emotions and it was all very familiar,” Danny tells Clarín. He planned the surprise and it worked (even though he had already talked to Luz about continuing their relationship).

To surprise his future wife, Danny asked to speak, pretending to give a Christmas speech. But not only did he do this, he also went through all the formalities involved. He asked Luz’s parents for permission, thanked her in-laws for accepting him, and finally proposed, which was in sign language (part of the proposal is not visible in the viral video).

When the tweet went viral, his surprise was enormous. They couldn’t believe that they were the protagonists of that emotional moment.

The wedding will take place next month and, although they haven’t decided yet, there is a possibility that they will spend their honeymoon in Argentina.

A love that overcomes the sound barrier

Danny and Luz already communicate fluently. Danny is practically an expert in sign language. He speaks and understands his girlfriend perfectly (but not his friends, of whom he sometimes loses track).

At first I was a little scared.. Little by little we were connecting. It is challenging. I couldn’t afford to have a relationship that was only oral. I had to teach him the signs to be able to communicate quickly,” admits Luz.

“We had a connection, he made an effort, he was patient and improved the relationship with the sign community. Learning the signs is not just learning them, but also relating to the community. It was difficult, it wasn’t easy,” she admits.

Danny believes that his relationship with her and her friends, who are also deaf, was a great help in learning the language. “A very peculiar thing happens to me, which is that I understand her when she speaks quickly, but sometimes it’s a little difficult for me to understand her friends, who are also deaf,” says Danny, who also claims that in Colombia, at least, she can communicate with virtually anyone who is deaf.

As for their professional career, he has already graduated as a systems engineer – the field in which he works – and Luz is about to end her career as a stylist.

The family grows

They won’t just get married in 2024: they’ll also become parents for the first time this year. Four months pregnant, Luz waits with trepidation and anxiety.

To make it less difficult for them to learn to become parents, the couple plans to live together in Bucaramanga. Luz wants to be close to her parents so they can guide them or help them raise her child.

Danny, who lives in a town 4 hours away, will move in with Luz.

“We’re not aligned to know all the things that come with a baby. The ideal is to have all the support possible and then total independence,” says Danny about raising his future child.

NM: “Luz, is a relationship like yours common?”

L: “Yes, there are relationships like that, but ours attracts a lot of attention for the time we are together. It’s amazing.”

And the comments on X prove it.

“What a beautiful moment! I think this shows those of us living with a disability that we can experience all aspects of life normally without fear and with complete confidence that we will find someone who will love and appreciate us, no matter what.” ” said @Fabiocubillos11.

“Crying over strangers is my thing,” another person added. “I wish you all the good and love this rotten world can offer you,” another added. and you can continue.
