The first thing is that we must distinguish the two based on their definitions. THE silver (Ag) is a chemical element, a noble metal Bright white in colour, characterized by being soft and malleable, ideal for jewellery.

Meanwhile, the White gold It is an alloy resulting from the fusion of multiple materials. Of course it has gold and other materials that give it the grayish white color, similar to silver. These can be rhodium or palladium, among others.

Difference between white gold and silver

Several jewelry storesfor example the renowned Customima or Tous, ensure that techniques exist to know whether the products are precious metals or not.

As already mentioned, unlike white gold, silver is a pure metal while white gold is a pure metal alloy of various metals.

Although both share some characteristics, they also have differences: both have a special shine and an elegant appearance.

Likewise, only one of the differences they call is color. Silver, for example, has a more lunar grayish color.

The trained eye will tell white gold has a light yellowish tone in the background (for them). Generally, this usually receives a rhodium plating from the jeweler as the last step.

It should be remembered that silver can rust over time and will take on a darker tone if not cared for or cleaned, while white gold will retain its shine and color.

Another difference is that silver is softer than white gold alloy, so its hardness is different: silver scratches more easily and the other is more resistant.

This leads to saying that the weight is also different: white gold weighs more than silver, therefore in a similar jewel The weight should be significantly different.

It must also be clarified that silver is a more widespread and less sought-after metal than gold, therefore white gold It’s more expensive due to its high composition of this metal.

The silver pieces, depending on the PH of the sweat, can “discolor” producing stains on the surface. fur of those who use them. This alteration does not occur with white gold.

Even jewelers talk about the brand”purity” of metals. Like gold gilt, white gold pieces are marked 14K (karat) or 18K.

If the jewel is made of silver it can have the number 925, which indicates that the silver component is 92.5%. They add other types of metals to give it hardness and be able to work better.
