Director Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement film ‘How Will You Live’ won the 81st Golden Globe in the Feature Animation category.
This is the first time that a Japanese animation work has won this category since the category was newly established in 2007. Nippon TV News reported, “We are expecting to win an award at the Academy Awards scheduled for this coming March.”
Director Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki did not attend the awards ceremony, but made an official statement in Producer Suzuki’s name.
Producer Suzuki said, “I’m really happy,” and added, “It’s special because it’s the first time a Ghibli work has won an award at the Golden Globe Awards, which have a long history.”
He continued, “In Japan, there has been a series of unfortunate news such as earthquakes and accidents since the beginning of the year. “When I heard reports that there were still many people waiting for rescue in the disaster-stricken area, I felt like I couldn’t bear it anymore,” he said, also expressing concern about damage from the strong earthquake on the Noto Peninsula.
At the end of the statement, he added that he hoped the bright news of winning the award would bring at least a little smile.
As Producer Suzuki said, the news of ‘How Will You Live’ winning the award is providing some small consolation to the Japanese people who have been devastated by a series of disasters.
Parodies using the title along with various congratulatory messages are being posted one after another on Japanese social media (SNS). A video of Producer Suzuki narrowly missing the award announcement and a parody of the movie’s title are spreading.
For the parody, you can freely modify the sentence “Are you guys going to do ○○” and add seriousness by writing it in a cursive font like the original poster, with everything from ‘Aren’t you guys going to make it ○○?’ to ‘How can we live in this heat?’ ‘With this mistake order.’ Various versions are being posted, such as ‘How should we live’, ‘How should an outsider/loner live’, etc.
