“The path towards peace requires respect for life, for all human life, starting with that of the unborn child, who cannot be suppressed or converted into a commercial product,” the pontiff declared during an audience with members of the Holy See’s diplomatic corps earlier this year.

“In this sense, I think the practice of so-called surrogacy is deplorable, which seriously offends the dignity of women and children; and is based on the exploitation of the mother’s situation of material need,” she added.

“For this reason I call on the international community to commit to a universal ban on this practice,” he urged.

The Catholic Church opposes this medically assisted procreation technique consists of implanting an embryo into the uterus of a surrogate motherwho delivers the child to the requesting couple after birth.

In June 2022, the Argentine Jesuit had already described surrogacy as an “inhuman practice”.

In November 2023, the Vatican indicated that children of same-sex couples, adopted or born through surrogacy, could be baptized.

Few countries in the world authorize it and when they do it is on an “altruistic” basis, that is, without any financial compensation.

Commercial surrogacy, where the surrogate receives financial compensation, is authorized in some US states.

For the Pope “a child is always a gift and never the object of a contract”.

Jorge Bergoglio regretted “the attempts that have occurred in recent decades to introduce new rights, not entirely compatible with those originally defined and not always acceptable” which “have given rise to ideological colonization”.

“Gender theory is extremely dangerous”

In that group the Pope stated that “gender theory occupies a central place, which is extremely dangerous because it erases differences in its claim to make everyone equal.”

“Such ideological colonizations cause wounds and divisions between states, instead of promoting peace-building,” he underlined.

In addition to calling for an end to the arms race and advocating an effective response to climate change, the Pope also focused his attention on the challenge of artificial intelligence.

“Careful reflection is therefore required at all levels, national and international, political and social, so that the development of artificial intelligence remains at the service of man, encouraging and not hindering interpersonal relationships, especially in young people. a healthy spirit of brotherhood and critical thinking capable of discernment”, he underlined.
