At least 25 people died and others were injured following a collision between a tourist bus and a truck in the state of Bahia, in north-eastern Brazil. Among the deceased there are seven men and 17 women.
“Military firefighters intervened in an accident that caused 25 deaths on BR 324 (highway), near the city of Gaviao,” the agency reported on the accident, which occurred about 250 kilometers from the city of Salvador de Bahia , capital of the state.
According to the newspaper O Globo,The accident occurred yesterday evening on the BR-324 highway when a tourist bus was traveling between Guarajuba and Jacobina and collided with a truck.
Most of the victims, including a pregnant person, were bus passengers. The images published by the emergency services show one of the vehicles upside down and in disarray.
The injured were taken to hospitals in the cities of Capim Grosso and Nova Fátima.
The reasons that caused the accident have not yet been disclosed, while experts were working on site, local media reported.
The Jacobina City Council expressed this Monday its “sincere condolences” to the family and friends of the victims and decreed three days of official mourning in the municipality.
