An explosion Monday at a hotel in Fort Worth, Texas, injured more than 20 people, some of whom were trapped in the basement before being found by rescuers, authorities said.
One of the injured is reportedly in critical condition after the accident, the causes of which are not yet clear.
Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Craig Trojacek said investigators believe it was “some type of gas explosion.”
The 20-story Sandman Signature hotel in the heart of downtown Fort Worth was under construction and is located in a busy area in the center of the city, a block from the Fort Worth Convention Center.

News broadcasts aired aerial footage showing firefighters using pickaxes to cut through drywall, broken glass and twisted metal that littered the street in front of the hotel. The authorities asked the population to avoid the area, which was closed to both people and vehicles due to the work carried out by rescuers.

According to the hotel’s website, the Sandman Signature Hotel Fort Worth Downtown has 245 rooms and was built in 1920 as the “Wagoner Building,” named after rancher and oilman William Thomas Wagoner. The building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979.
