Russia’s massive attack resulted in more than 50 civilian casualties across Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military operated an air defense weapon system supported by Western countries to counter Russian air strikes, but were helpless.
According to the AFP news agency on the 8th (local time), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a regular speech that day, “A large-scale missile attack (by Russia) has begun again,” and “45 people were injured and 4 were killed.”
The Ukrainian President’s Office said a missile strike damaged a shopping center and a high-rise building and killed one person in Kryvyrikh, the central city of President Zelenskyy’s hometown.
Two people were killed in a missile attack in the western city of Khmelnytskyi, and an elderly woman was killed when a house collapsed due to a bombing in the northeastern city of Kharkiv.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that “only military targets were hit.”
Ukraine has been on the defensive using air defense weapon systems supported by Western countries, but has succeeded in shooting down only 18 of the 51 missiles launched by Russia.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat said, “A large number of ballistic missiles were launched today, but they say the interception rate is not very high.”
However, he added that Russia achieved “good results,” with all drones launched being shot down and some missiles missing their targets.
Meanwhile, Russia has been repeatedly shelling Ukraine since the end of last year. There were even suspicions that ballistic missiles received from North Korea were launched into Ukraine.
The United States claimed that Russia fired ballistic missiles received from North Korea into Ukraine on December 30 and 2 last year, and Ukraine also confirmed this.
