A defendant who shocked a judge by attacking him during a trial in a U.S. court reappeared in court to receive the sentence that was not handed down at the time.

On the 8th (local time), American media, including the New York Times (NYT), reported that Debra Redden (30), the defendant who attacked the judge, appeared in court again that day. Looking at the released video, the court was thoroughly prepared to prevent any untoward incident from happening again.

A muzzle was placed on Redden’s face to prevent him from spitting or attacking, and his hands were handcuffed to a chain belt and made to wear gloves. It was a look that reminded me of the serial killer Hannibal Lecter from the movie ‘The Silence of the Lambs.’ Here, reinforced security guards surrounded Redden.

Redden, who was charged with assault, appeared in court for sentencing on the 3rd. Redden’s lawyer pleaded guilty and requested a suspended sentence for psychiatric treatment and other reasons. However, Judge Mary Kerry Holsus, who presided over the trial, questioned Redden’s criminal history. She denied her lawyer’s request.

Then Redden suddenly jumped at the judge’s bench, attacked Judge Holsus, knocked him down, and began assaulting him. The court marshal and others rushed to stop him, but Redden shook them off and continued to attack Judge Holsus. After a brief struggle, Redden was eventually subdued and handcuffed.

Judge Holsus, who was attacked, suffered a minor head injury, and the court sheriff and clerk were also injured, but fortunately none of them were seriously injured. Judge Holsus returned to work the day after the incident. And on this day, a hearing was held to hand down the sentence that could not be finalized due to the commotion at the time, and Judge Holsus and Redden faced each other again in court.

Before sentencing, Judge Holsus emphasized, “The defendant’s actions did not change the original sentence.” He then sentenced Redden to up to four years in prison. Redden could be eligible for parole in 19 months, depending on his behavior in prison and the decision of the parole board.

Redden has been jailed several times in the past on charges including theft and domestic violence. The sentence handed down this time has nothing to do with the attack on the judge, and Redden has been additionally indicted on charges of assault on the judge and is scheduled to be tried again by a different judge.
