David Smith, a spokesman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, said a man’s body was found several hours later and another man was rescued with non-life threatening injuries. He said no one else was missing.

The police decided to reveal more details at a press conference this afternoon.

The landslide occurred around 9:30 a.m. on a steep slope below the KT-22 lift. This is a slope named “Black Diamond” that is operated for skiers and snowboarders with advanced skills.

The landslide occurred because a large storm with strong winds approached the area, creating bad weather.

In the accident area, strong winds and strong snowstorms are forecast to continue, with an additional 61cm of heavy snow falling until the early morning of the 11th.

Strong winds of 177 km/h were forecast at the summit of Alpine Meadows and the attached resort here.

Palisades Ski Area is where the 1960 Winter Olympics were held and is located on the west side of Lake Tahoe, 64km from Reno, Nevada.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, heavy snowfall of 5 cm per hour continued to fall in the area around the lake from the afternoon of the 9th, 10 days before the accident.

Here in Alpine Meadows, an avalanche occurred in 2020, killing one skier and finding another injured. Before that, in March 1982, seven people, including ski resort employees, lost their lives in an avalanche.
