“The former president is accused of perpetrating the coup d’état of December 7, 2022,” the prosecutor’s office indicated on the social network.

On December 7, 2022, Castillo was impeached by Congress and arrested shortly after attempting to dissolve Parliament, in a move that was supported by neither the military nor the police.

Castillo is being held on three years of conditional confinement in a prison for former presidents.

After the dismissal of the former president, Congress appointed the then vice president, Dina Boluarte, as his successor, who took power on December 7.

After Boluarte’s appointment, anti-government demonstrations erupted across the country until March 2023, resulting in the deaths of 49 civilians in clashes with security forces, according to authorities.
