A 26-year-old script from the famous American sitcom ‘Friends’ found in a trash can was sold at auction for 22,000 pounds (about 37 million won).
On the 12th (local time), foreign media such as the BBC reported that the script for ‘Friends’ put up by British auctioneer Hanson Ross was sold for 22,000 pounds at a recent auction. This amount significantly exceeds the expected price of 600 to 800 pounds (approximately 1 million to 1.34 million won).
Information on the successful bidder was not disclosed.
The script in question is the script for ‘Ross’s Wedding’, a two-part episode of ‘Friends’ Season 4.
After filming of the episode ended in 1998, an employee in charge of administrative support on site retrieved the script that had been thrown in the trash to prevent the ending of the episode from being leaked. The employee said he found the script in a trash can a few weeks after filming ended. The employee said, “I didn’t know what to do with it, so I kept it in my office.”
When he left the company a year later in 1999, he took this script home. Twenty years later, while cleaning after moving, I found a forgotten script and put it up for auction.
He said, “I could have just thrown it away, but I remembered the script again before moving.”
Also, while putting the script up for auction, he said, “It’s funny, but I’m not a ‘Friends’ fan,” and “I only recently saw the episode in the script.”
The auction house said, “People were enthusiastic about this script,” and “worldwide interest was phenomenal.” “Although the last episode (of ‘Friends’) aired 20 years ago in 2004, millions of people still love this show,” he said.
The estimated value of these scripts was expected to rise further due to the work’s continued popularity and the recent death of star Matthew Perry.
Meanwhile, ‘Friends’ aired on NBC in the United States from 1994 to 2004. It is a sitcom about the love and friendship of six friends living in Manhattan, New York, USA. The main actors who appeared in this work also showed off their close friendship in real life, not just on air.
