Francisco, who was able to read his message two days after suffering from mild bronchitis, lamented that although they exchanged wishes for peace in the new year, “weapons continued to kill and destroy”.

“We pray that those who hold power in these conflicts reflect on the fact that war is not the way to resolve them, because it sows death among civilians and destroys cities and infrastructure,” he noted.

“In other words, war today in itself is a crime against humanity. Let us not forget: war in itself is a crime against humanity,” he added.

The Argentine Pope stated that “the people need peace, the world needs peace” and encouraged “peace education”, alluding to the recent statements of the vicar of the Custody of the Holy Land, the Franciscan Ibrahim Faltas.

“We must educate for peace. It is clear that we, the whole of humanity, do not yet have an education capable of stopping every war. Let us always pray for this grace, let us always educate for peace”, concluded the Pontiff in front of the hundreds of faithful who they listened to him from St. Peter’s Square.
