Strong storm in Rio de Janeiro leaves at least 10 dead or missing

At least ten people died in the city of Rio de Janeiroin Brazil, due to the heavy rains registered in the last 24 hours.

In addition to the deaths, it appears that at least one woman was missing and this is why the rescue teams searched her intensely.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Peeshe decreed this Sunday “emergency situation” to the city, then relief teams travel through the hardest-hit areas to assist those most in need.

Some regions of the city have recorded cumulative data in the last 24 hours more than 200 millimeters of waterexceeding in one day the rainfall expected for the entire month of January.

The Rio Fire Brigade responded to approximately 200 events related to rescues and interventions due to floods and landslides.

Brasil Avenue, one of the city’s main thoroughfares, had water up to the hoods of vehicles. Additionally, shopping malls were left out of service after the lower floors filled with water.

Faced with this scenario, the mayor recommended that the population not leave their homes and avoid traveling to avoid “putting their lives at risk” and “hindering the work of public agents”.

The forecast for the city indicates that the weather will remain unstable on Sunday too with “light rain” in the afternoon and evening, with minimums of 24 degrees and maximums of 27.

For tomorrow, Monday, conditions should improve and no more precipitation is expected, with temperature records that will fluctuate between 26 and 32 degrees.
