The European Union (EU) is preparing a sixth round of sanctions against Russia that could include the imposition of an embargo on Russia’s oil imports by the end of the year, two European diplomats said on Sunday.
From confessionalsthat is, private discussions, took place over the weekend between European Commission officials and representatives of several EU Member States.EU to lay the foundations for an agreement for the meeting of the ambassadors of the “Twenty-Seven” scheduled for Wednesday in Brussels.
The sixth set of these sanctions will also target Russian and Belarusian banks as well as a new list of people and companies.
Also, European energy ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday in an extraordinary session to review the situation arising from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.
Russian group Gazprom announced on Wednesday the suspension of its gas deliveries to Bulgaria and Poland, members of the European Union, because these two countries did not pay in rubles as imposed by the Kremlin.
Germany, one of the largest consumers of Russian crude, is said to have agreed to impose an embargo by the end of 2022, but other countries, including Austria, Hungary, Italy and Slovakia, have expressed reservations, fearing huge impact on energy prices, according to European diplomats.
