The Zorro series, which will debut this Friday on Amazon Prime Video, is a “necessary” renewal of the mythical story of the vigilante, considered the Spanish actor in an interview with EFE in Mexico. Miguel Bernardeauwho plays the legendary character Diego de la Vega.
“It’s a necessary renewal of the characters, of the dynamics and also includes current things, such as more female characters and it’s something you need to see. Otherwise children will not see a reality that corresponds to what interests them now”, considered the actor in the Mexican capital.
He explained that another current topic under discussion is seizure of territoriessomething that is “happening now all over the world”.
The series shows a younger Diego de la Vega than other previous projects that dealt with the story of Zorro, a man of the aristocracy of New Spain during the Mexican period in California (1821-1846) in the missions, towns and ranches. California, who together with his deaf-mute servant Bernardo (played by Paco Tous), fights against injustice.
“He is a younger Diego de la Vega who has to find himself as an adult and the figure of Zorro helps him develop as an adult. The characters around him, especially the women, also help him establish his principles, which have been completely shocked when he finds out his father wasn’t who he thought he was,” Bernardeau said.
The series, consisting of 10 episodes, will transport viewers on an adventure full of action and courage in the 19th century.
In the series, Bernardeau plays Don Diego de la Vega. The story follows de la Vega as he takes on the role of Zorro to expose his father’s killers and bring them to justice.
“In addition to fighting for justice in Los Angeles, Diego must face the challenges of being a hero and understanding how his role impacts California in a time of constant change,” Prime Video said in a review.
Powerful women
The Mexican actress Renata Notniwho also plays Lolita, Zorro’s first love in the series, agrees with Bernardeau that the production is full of women as powerful as her character, who have given her great inspiration and desire to bring it to life ever since she read the scripts.
The series will have 10 episodes.“It’s an incredible challenge and it makes you proud because you know that today girls or women will feel well represented and identified with Lolita, which for me was very important,” Notni considered.
She added that she enjoyed playing a character who is a period woman but who “breaks all social codes, patterns and stereotypes.”
Both Notni and Bernardeau and the Mexicans Ana Laevska, Andres Almeida, Dahlia Xiuhcoatl AND Cuauhtli Jimenezalso part of the cast, he underlined that a local story, like the “fight for a piece of land”, becomes something universal in this series and is linked to Zorro while maintaining its essence.
“When we talk about the local it becomes universal if we touch on the right points, and these new discourses and topics that are inserted into it such as the relationship with the native populations do not substantially modify the character of Zorro, who continues to be this hero who he goes to fight for justice but if you remember that the world has changed, the world is different”, considered Jiménez.
The discourses in the world, among the new generations, they said, are different, and presenting Zorro as he was presented before, “would be like saying that the world has not changed”, he added.
Bernardeau became known for his character in Elite.‘Zorro’ is one of the most anticipated Prime Video productions of the year and, although the actors have explained that they try to keep calm and escape any kind of expectations, they are aware of the size of the project.
“We want to see what the result will be, if it will generate an audience, if there will be a new generation, if it will have the charm of Zorro. Above all, we are excited that people are already seeing it,” concluded Almeida.
