For the travel insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection there are 15 countries which are safer than others for tourists. Those who have earned a spot on your list are the perfect combination of confidence and attractiveness.
In its new annual report, Berkshire Hathaway has shared an updated top 15 of destinations ideal for those looking for a relaxing vacation. Of course: no one guarantees supreme peace. Crime can occur anywhere and some areas may be safer than others.
“The definition of a safe destination has evolved. In our most recent survey, travelers prefer countries they consider safe destinations where they can move freely. Without discrimination or harassment,” she told USA Today Carol Muellerthe vice president of the company.
The list was determined through a survey of 1,702 people about their travel experiences in different countries. Data from third-party resources that assess security issues, such as the Global Peace Index and State Department travel assessments, were also used.
The 15 safest countries in the world for travellers, according to Berkshire Hathaway
15- Brazil
Although Brazil is a country with very dangerous areas, it is the only South American country to make this year’s list thanks to the votes of women, people of color and members of the LGBTIQ+ community who said they felt safe there.
14- Spain
The tourism/crime ratio is very low in this popular European country. Berkshire Hathaway especially advises tourists to beware of pickpockets and passport thefts.
13- France
With all precautions taken, France can be a safe place to travel, says Berkshire Hathaway. What stands out in the country of the Eiffel Tower is the safety of transport and the ability to protect against epidemics.
12- Japan
Japanese politeness and orderliness are the key to making this country appear on the list. Its main problems lie in natural disasters.
11- New Zealand
Low crime rates make New Zealand an idyllic destination. The site considers it “great” for women who want to travel alone.
10-Australia
Like the previous one, the nature-city combination and the low crime rate make Australia an essential place to visit.
9- Iceland
Iceland is the most gender equal and safest country in the world in terms of robberies.
8- Denmark
Thanks to its low crime rate, Denmark was the second safest country in the world last year. This 2024 has gone down a few notches thanks to the virtues of the next seven.
7- Portugal
With safe and orderly cities and peaceful rural areas, Portugal is also a model country.
6- United Kingdom
The low rate of murder and robbery makes the United Kingdom a very complete and, above all, very safe destination.
5- Netherlands
Its capital is one of the safest in the world. Its main problems concern the continuing increase in tourists and reckless revelers roaming the streets.
4- Ireland
Ireland recorded fewer homicides than 16 American cities in 2022, the report points out. There’s nothing else to add, right?
3- Norway
With Oslo at the top, Norway is one of the most peaceful countries in the world. It is one of the safest in terms of crime rate, terrorist activity and violent demonstrations.
2- Switzerland
A classic of classics. As many already know, this European country – often cited as a paradigm of security – stands out both for its high quality of life and its scenic beauty.
1- Canada
After ranking sixth last year, Canada rose to the top spot in 2024 for its low violent crime rate and strict gun laws, as well as its high standard of living and political stability.
