On the 19th (local time), the Netflix ‘Squid Game: The Trial’ experience hall located at CBS Studios in Los Angeles, California, USA. In a space of about 16 to 20 m2 (5 to 6 pyeong), about 30 participants move and stop repeatedly according to the signals of the American-style ‘Rose of Sharon has bloomed’ game.

When one participant missed the signal, the robot Younghee immediately responded and eliminated that participant. How did they know the participants’ movements and eliminate them? I looked everywhere and there were cameras, but they weren’t closed circuit (CCTV) TV.

Looking closely, it was Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S23 Ultra. The hyperlapse function, which allows filming even in low-light environments, was applied to capture the participants’ concentration on the game.

Participants who passed the ‘Rose of Sharon has bloomed’ game followed the security guard’s instructions and moved to another location for the next game. The place we moved to was a waiting area to explain the next game, and the frontman appeared on a large TV giving instructions.

The frontman in the video had a three-dimensional effect as if he were in front of the participants. The picture quality was so clear that no noise was visible, and the sound harmonized with the experience center and gave a sense of resonance. It turned out that this TV was also a Samsung Electronics product (Neo QLED 8K TV).

◆From Galaxy S23 to Neo QLED TV… Samsung in harmony with the ‘Ogame’ experience center

Samsung Electronics installed Neo QLED 8K TV, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy S23 Ultra at the Squid Game Experience Center opened by Netflix in December last year.

Neo QLED 8K TV was used to play the ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ trailer and game guide video in the experience center. Netflix explained that the Neo QLED 8K TV, which has high quality picture quality and sound, helps participants learn the world view of the game and gives them the feeling of immersion as if they were the main character of the actual squid game.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was used as a FlexCam kiosk installed in the lobby of the experience center. Participants can take a photo with the background border of the squid game, like Four Cuts of Life, and then download it through QR code or Quick Share.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra was also used in the digital Dalgona game along with Rose of Sharon in Bloom. It is done by precisely cutting Dalgona, which has models such as stars, umbrellas, and circles, using the S Pen built into the Ultra model.

While playing the game, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s front camera captures the faces of participants concentrating on the game, and photos can be received through Quick Share after the game ends.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics said that it has no plans to replace the currently available Galaxy S23 Ultra with the recently released Galaxy S24 Ultra, considering the experiential center’s closing date (scheduled for March).

◆“Effectively creating an experience center through partnership with Samsung Electronics”

Netflix’s ‘Squid Game: The Trial’ experience center was created so that the general public can experience the games that appeared in the drama ‘Squid Game’ and the entertainment show ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’.

40 participants aged 13 or older participate in up to 6 games such as Rose of Sharon in Bloom, Marbles, and Memory Step (a variation of crossing glass stepping stones) for 70 minutes, and the last person standing will receive priority selection for ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ given.

Netflix also set up a squid game souvenir shop and a restaurant with a Korean night market in the background, with K-pop music playing in the experience center. At the souvenir shop, you can buy t-shirts, hats, tumblers, etc. The restaurant, run by a chef who runs a Korean restaurant in Los Angeles, sells Korean food such as instant ramen, tteokbokki, soju cocktail, and bibimbap.

A Netflix official said, “Thanks to our partnership with Samsung Electronics, we have been able to organize the space effectively by arranging (devices) in the right places,” and said there are plans to expand this experience center not only in the U.S. but also in global markets such as Korea.
