Utilities, shipping, rail and urban transport, and most private companies in Greece are operating at a slow pace this Monday (2) as unions called a 24-hour general strike to protest the price hike.
Athens’ public transport operates as usual on Sunday, while supermarkets and shops are closed for a public holiday.
During the traditional Labor Day demonstrations on Sunday, about 9,000 people protested in Athens to demand that the government take more action to protect their purchasing power in the face of inflation.
The inflation rate in Greece was 9.4% in April, exceeding the European average of 7.5%.
In March, electricity prices recorded a significant 79.3% increase in annual rhythm, a situation stemming from the occupation of Ukraine by Russian troops.
The Greek government has already distributed 4 billion euros in social assistance to combat the rapidly increasing inflation.
On 1 May, the minimum wage was set at 50 euros and currently stands at 713 euros gross.
However, the unions and the left opposition find the measures insufficient and demand a minimum wage of €825 per month.
