In recent days, the drastic decision that United Airlines has made regarding the use of cell phones by its crew during flights has become known.

According to the specialized site Live and flyThe American-born airline is threatening to fire crew members who use cell phones while sitting in jump seats.

The site has accessed a note addressed to flight attendants stating that cabin crew are required to offer “visible and attentive service to customers” and that is why this initiative was taken.

The note warns that phone use by flight attendants and flight attendants in jump seats can, among other things, distract the crew in the event of an accident and cause personal injury or injury to a companion during landing.

The notice emphasizes that crew members must remain accessible to the public in uniform at all times and show courtesy to customers and other employees. “Any crew member found to have committed a violation will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal,” the alleged notice reads.

The rule, the site emphasizes, does not apply to phones that United provides to its flight attendants to perform services or communicate with colleagues.

What did people think?

A debate on the controversial measure arose in the comments on the Live and Let’s Fly article.

“Then United will have to take on bigger associations. The current generation can’t function without using a smartphone, so they won’t be able to work for United,” one person said.

Another, equally harsh towards young people, wrote: “Many young people could put down their phones while working. This is more of a lax corporate attitude. More work culture in the airline industry than anywhere else.”

There were also those who understood the situation the crew might find themselves in.

“I think this is a very difficult situation. (…) on very long flights, when most passengers are asleep, there really isn’t much to do for certain periods of time, so it wouldn’t be necessary to check their phones. It will be a big problem, but rules are rules,” one user commented.

And a fourth added: “So when you have flight attendants on a plane for up to 20 hours a day and tied to the plane, when do you suggest they look at their phones?”

Unusual accident on board

On October 31st of last year, an accident occurred during a JetBlue flight that continues to amaze to this day.

A 74 year old grandmother named Angela She reported that airline stewards beat her over a “disagreement” over a half-consumed cup of tea.

Angela was flying to Costa Rica to celebrate her retirement. Allegedly, while she was in the bathroom, flight attendants went around the plane collecting trash from passengers and ignored her cup of tea.

So, when Grandma saw that her glass was still on the seat, she went to find a garbage can to throw it away. Since she couldn’t find it, she left the residue in the crew’s kitchen so they could dispose of it.

The crew didn’t like this attitude at all and it would have caused the clash. Due to the altercation, the flight was diverted to Orlando.

JetBlue has not yet come forward publicly with its version of events following the customer complaint.
