U.S. President Joe Biden, who is aiming for his second term, plans to solidify his position with an overwhelming primary victory, and the South Carolina primary is expected to be his first test.

According to the South Carolina Election Commission, this primary will be held in a primary format at polling places located throughout the region from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Unlike a caucus, you can participate in a primary even if you are not a party member. South Carolina uses an open primary system, so any registered voter can vote. However, only one of the two parties must participate in the primary.

While the Republican Party entered the primary as early as the 15th of last month, this is the Democratic Party’s first official primary. The New Hampshire primary has already been held, but President Biden did not participate, so South Carolina became the starting point for the primary.

This year’s Democratic primary is dominated by President Joe Biden, so the winner has already been decided.

In a Democratic primary poll conducted by Emerson University from the 26th to the 29th of last month, the party recorded an approval rating of 72%, and in a Quinnipiac University survey conducted from the 25th to the 29th of last month, the party’s approval rating was 78%.

Competitors within the party have clear limitations. Representative Dean Phillips (Minnesota) received close to 20% of the votes in the New Hampshire primary, but this appears to have been due to the fact that President Biden’s name was not on the ballot. In opinion polls, Representative Phillips’ approval rating within the party is only around 5%.

Accordingly, rather than rankings, the main concern is how overwhelming support President Biden can receive.

President Biden is struggling in virtual competitions with his leading rival, former President Donald Trump, and plans to increase his approval rating and solidify his position by winning an overwhelming victory in the primary. The starting point is South Carolina.

In South Carolina, the Republican candidate has won every presidential election since 1980. It is not classified as a swing state, and the chances of the Democratic Party winning this presidential election are slim.

Nevertheless, President Biden visited South Carolina twice last month alone, and Vice President Kamala Harris also visited three times since the new year. Underlying this move is the plan to use the South Carolina primary as a stepping stone for a leap forward.

In particular, in South Carolina, about 26% of residents are African American. President Biden is assessed as losing the support of black voters, and he plans to use this primary as an opportunity to reverse this assessment.

The Washington Post (WP) said, “It is rare for a president seeking re-election to waste time and energy on a state where his chances of winning are slim,” and “President Biden sees South Carolina as a stage to deliver a message to skeptical black voters.” “It appears that they are doing it,” he said.
