Expected to pursue acquisition of ‘Brighter AI’… AI changes the faces and vehicle numbers of people around you
‘Vision Pro’, which takes pictures of the surrounding environment, is expected to resolve privacy concerns

Apple is pursuing the acquisition of a German artificial intelligence (AI) startup to protect personal information. ‘Vision Pro’, which Apple officially released this month, has been concerned about privacy infringement in that it takes pictures of the surrounding environment. To resolve these concerns, the plan is to secure technology that can more naturally change a person’s face or vehicle number into another form.

According to foreign media such as GSM Arena on the 5th, Apple is reportedly preparing to acquire German AI startup Brighter AI.

Brighter AI has a technology called ‘Deep Natural Anonymization 2.0’. The key to this technology is that AI protects people’s faces and data contained in photos, as befits the name of anonymity.

Google, Apple, etc. provide actual images of specific streets or places in their maps apps. As a result, personal information such as pedestrians or cars is often included in photos. Accordingly, these companies are ‘blurring’ people’s faces and vehicle license plates in images.

Vision Pro allows you to look at the external environment while wearing the device, and it is known that this function takes pictures of surrounding objects and then displays them to the user. In addition, since you can take photos and videos while using Vision Pro, blur processing to protect personal information needs to be applied like in the map app.

Blur processing is not a big problem in map apps, etc., but it may feel uncomfortable when users see blurred people’s faces in real time, such as with Apple Vision Pro. This is why Apple is pursuing the acquisition of Brighter AI.

Brighter AI’s technology uses AI to change a person’s face or vehicle registration number into a completely different form to protect personal information. For example, if you see a car with the actual license plate number ‘1234’, AI changes the number to ‘5678’. It is expected that using Vision Pro with this technology will provide a more natural feel.

It is reported that Apple plans to apply anonymization technology to Vision Pro first if it succeeds in acquiring Brighter AI. There is a high possibility that this will be applied to Apple’s own maps app in the future.
