Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that the 75-year-old monarch had been diagnosed with a “form of cancer” after just 17 months on the throne, having already begun treatment and suspended some of his activities.

He will be in our thoughts and prayers. Many families across the country listening to us will have experienced the same thing and will know what it means for everyone. So we will just encourage that and hope to get through this situation as quickly as possible,” Sunak harangued in an interview on BBC public television.

The prime minister assured that he has been in regular contact with the monarch since the diagnosis became known, and guaranteed that their communication will continue as usual. Traditionally they meet once a week.

Asked how he received the news, Sunak said: “Obviously, like everyone else, shocked and sad, and all our thoughts are with him and his family. Fortunately, this was detected in time.”

Shortly before, he had expressed on his X account: “I wish His Majesty a speedy and complete recovery. I have no doubt that he will regain all his strength in a short time and I know that the whole country will wish him the best.”

While it was not revealed what type of cancer it was, Buckingham Palace said in a statement that the king had begun regular treatment prescribed by his doctors. No information about the cancer’s stage or prognosis was also disclosed.

“The King remains totally positive regarding his treatment and is eager to return to fully carrying out his public duties as soon as possible,” reads the text released on the Palace networks.

The monarch will postpone his public commitments, which will be undertaken by other royals while he undergoes treatment, which began yesterday on an outpatient basis, after returning from Sandringham Palace in London. While he will not attend public events, the king will continue to fulfill his constitutional role as head of state, the BBC reported.

Charles underwent prostate surgery at a private hospital in London more than a week ago, and the royal family reported at the time that the king wanted to make the treatment public to encourage other men to get the check-up.

Continuing the line of transparency initiated on the occasion of his prostate operation, Carlos III “has chosen to share his diagnosis to avoid speculation and with the hope of helping the public understand people affected by cancer around the world”, he added the palace. .
