Many women entrust their pregnancy to this saint, known for centuries as the protector of future mothers, women giving birth and even newborns.
Indeed, Ramón de Portell received the nickname Unborn (“unborn”) because he was born with a rustic caesarean section, when his mother had already died.
During his life, in addition to freeing the slaves of North Africa, he would help many women in labor, without having any medical knowledge. For this reason this collaboration has always been considered miraculous.
What miracles does the saint San Ramón (Nonatos) perform?
Ramón He was born in Portell, near Barcelona, around the year 1204. His mother had died and the child had been taken from her womb, apparently by the action of the Viscount of Cardona. Over the years they began to call him Nonato.
His father authorized him to join the order of Mercedari which he had created a few years earlier. San Pietro Nolasco. According to the Church’s biography, he succeeded St. Peter Nolasco as “redeemer or helper of captives” and was sent to North Africa to fulfill that mission.
The Order provided him with a considerable sum of money which the priest gave to the Arabs to free the slaves. But one day he ran out of money and had to change his strategy.
Penniless, began to offer himself as a hostage to obtain the freedom of prisoners. This attitude was not well received and the saint was treated cruelly, although he managed to walk the streets to comfort Christians and convert some Muslims.
For his evangelization work the authorities sentenced him to death, but Saint Ramone Nonato he continued with her. He resisted the whippings and, for eight months, even endured having his lips pierced to put a padlock in his mouth (an image with which he is depicted in many paintings). In the end, he was rescued by other Mercedarians.
I go back to Iberian Peninsula, where, in 1239, he received the title of cardinal from Pope Gregory IX, who, months later, summoned him to Rome. In 1240 he began the journey, but only reached Cardona, about ten kilometers from Barcelona, where he died on 31 August.
Pope Alexander VII authorized his cult in 1657. His relics are preserved in convent of San Ramón de Portellknown as “el Escorial de la Segarra” due to its size.
In the Villa Luro neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, since 1939, the parish dedicated to San Ramon Nonato receives, every August 31st, pregnant women who seek your protection so that the birth is successful.
