The novel by David Nicholls “Always the Same Day” (“One Day”) recently expanded its universe with the Netflix premiere of a new adaptation, albeit this time in series format.
A film adaptation was released in 2011 with Anne Hathaway AND Jim Sturgess as protagonists, who have become a sort of minor classic of romantic cinema in recent decades.
It follows the plot, both of the novel and of the film and of the series Emma AND Right, two young people with opposite characters who meet on graduation day and have seen each other every July 15th for twenty years. And the question remains latent…
Is Always the Same Day based on real events?
The answer is NO. Although there are parts inspired by real events, such as the character Emma, Nicholls studied English and drama at university.
In a 2021 story with The Guardian, the novel’s author said the idea came to him 20 years before the book was published. It was the mid-eighties, when I was studying the literature “Tess of the d’Urbervilles”, Thomas Hardy.
Hardy’s book made him think about the importance of dates beyond birthdays and anniversaries, and when decades later he had to adapt that novel for a BBC screenplay, he was once again struck by the idea that a “normal” day could be really important to someone’s life. life.
So, since he was at that time looking for an idea for a third novel, he decided to apply that idea to his story, that of an annual meeting of two young people.
He set the book on St. Swithin’s Day (a day tied to graduation season) and also started in Edinburgh, a city he loved.
“The intention with ‘One Day’ was to write something intensely emotional with the quality of a great old song,” the author said in the aforementioned note to the British media.
