The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said on Monday that the number of civilians killed since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 has exceeded 3,000.
The death toll, which has stood at 3,153 so far, represents an increase of 254 from Friday. Citing access difficulties and ongoing verification efforts, OHCHR said the true figure was likely significantly higher.
The human rights office said most of the victims were killed without responsibility by explosive weapons with a wide range of effects, such as missiles and airstrikes.
Russia describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special operation” to disarm Ukraine and protect it from fascists – a claim that Ukraine and the West say are baseless.
