President Jair Bolsonaro has suggested to Turkish officials that some kind of delegation of presidents be formed in Moscow to visit Vladimir Putin. While the proposal has been described as “megalomantic” by a number of diplomats within the State Department, on the side of the mediators in the conflict with Ukraine there is a perception that the moment is for lobbying negotiations, not a “show”. . . .

Bolsonaro’s idea came last week during a visit to Turkish Prime Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu’s Planalto Palace. In an interview with reporters after meeting with the Brazilian president, the minister said Bolsonaro praised Ankara’s role in the attempt to mediate between the Russians and Ukrainians. Itamaraty members approved UOL In fact, the offer was made.

In recent weeks, the Turkish government has been the organizer of negotiations in the hope that a ceasefire can be reached.

But the Turk left Brazil with a new offer. “Brazil’s President Bolsonaro said he is ready to organize a joint visit to Moscow with some of the country’s top leaders, if President Erdogan also agrees.”

According to him, the Brazilian said he wanted to “contribute to his efforts”. “We said we would do a research and get back to them,” the Turkish minister said.

In diplomatic circles, Turkey’s work is considered one of the rare channels for dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow, and the order is to maintain a more cautious profile so that understandings can emerge.

Therefore, the proposal of a high-profile circle will not fulfill this task. There is a fear among negotiators that the visit will help vote and popularity for presidents who will make the trip, not seek peace.

Bolsonaro went to the Kremlin in February, closing the doors to himself in the US and Europe. The president chose Moscow to show his constituents that he was also welcomed by foreign leaders. The trip was watched with concern by the Western powers.

More recently, Brazil has refrained from condemning Putin in international organisations, advocated not removing Russia from the G20, and abstained from several UN resolutions against Moscow.

Not by chance, the Kremlin began praising Brazil’s stance and even suggested once again that it would like to see the country as a permanent member of the UN Security Council as a way to curb American influence.

Therefore, it was not excluded that the idea of a mission to Moscow would be accepted by Putin. “He knows he has to feed those who support him, or at least those who don’t comply with Western sanctions,” a senior UN official said.

Therefore, the mediator role will not be exactly what Brazil could take. For this, Bolsonaro would also have to gesture and even visit Ukrainians, which is not recommended.

During his meeting with journalists, the Turkish prime minister also underlined that Bolsonaro and Nicolas Maduro are close to Moscow despite their rivals.

“Brazil and Venezuela, you know, have good relations with Russia. Both countries said the war must stop,” he added.
