In recent days the local media have reported that the Roman Barbara Ioele was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for fraud.

Ioele had sent her employer five maternity leaves for five children presumably born between 2014 and 2019. Curiously, the woman had invented a name for each: Benedetta, Angélica, Abramo, Letizia and Ismaele.

It’s indisputablein light of the full confession of Davide Pizzinato (Barbara’s partner), of having participated in the crime of aggravated fraud against the public body”, wrote the judges in the justification for the sentence.

As reported by La Repubblica, Ioele presented “false medical certificates signed by a gynecologist (a false signature)” to make the INPS believe that she had had twelve high-risk pregnancies and thus be able to collect money from the institute. In this way Barbara collected 111 thousand euros and also committed a scam against the Italian government.

With this documentation “they first deceived the ASL, which confirmed the requirements for early abstention from work and then presented it to the INPS to obtain undue emoluments”.

The origin of the case

Barbara’s scam came to light in January 2020, when a group of investigators cornered the couple and Pizzinato, then 55, he ended up confessing.

“I knew well that Barbara wasn’t pregnant,” the man said, adding: “She made the (false) certificates and took them (to the ASL). “This is what I’ve known since 2012. That’s when our relationship started.”
