Two people were killed this Friday and four others were injured in a gun attack while they were at a bus stop in southern Israel. The attacker was killed by a civilian on the spot.
“A terrorist who arrived at the bus station, apparently in a car, opened fire on several people until he was neutralized by a civilian who was there,” at the Rem Masmiya intersection, located about 40 km south- east of Tel Aviv, police said in a statement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to the attack by saying it was a reminder “that the whole country is a (fighting) front and that the killers, who are not just from Gaza, want to kill us all.”
Netanyahu, who expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, also took the opportunity to insist that Israel will continue its offensive “until complete victory” on all fronts.
Magen David Adom’s emergency service said its paramedics found six victims at the scene, one in critical condition, three in serious condition and two in moderate condition.
However, two of these people were declared dead at Kaplan Hospital, where they had been transferred.
Some videos circulating on social media show extensive bloodstains and a person lying on the ground, while officers cordoned off the area.
“It was a complex scene, we saw gunshot victims, some of whom were unconscious. A 20-year-old man was unconscious, without a pulse or breathing, with gunshot wounds,” a doctor said.
“Another 20-year-old man was unconscious, two men aged 16 and 65 were conscious with serious penetrating wounds and a 65-year-old woman was in moderate condition,” he added, specifying that another 52-year-old injured man was ran from the scene and then called for help.
Authorities did not provide details of the attacker, but often use the term “terrorist” to refer to Palestinians or Arab-Israelis who commit crimes as part of the conflict.
Israel and the occupied West Bank are experiencing the worst spiral of violence since the Second Intifada (2000-2005), a phenomenon that has worsened since the war broke out on 7 October between the Islamist group Hamas, which controls the Strip of Gaza, and Israel.
So far this year alone, 71 Palestinians and six people have died on the Israeli side in this area.
