Mobile World Congress (MWC), the world’s largest information and communication technology (ICT) exhibition, will be held in Barcelona, Spain on the 26th (local time). While the biggest topic of this event is expected to be artificial intelligence (AI), domestic telecommunications companies in particular plan to differentiate themselves from other companies with ‘communication-specific AI’. In addition to telecommunication companies, global big tech and semiconductor companies such as Microsoft (MS), Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), NVIDIA, and Qualcomm are expected to participate and showcase AI-related technologies.
According to the Global Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) on the 18th, about 2,400 companies from 200 countries will participate in this year’s MWC with the main theme of ‘Future First’. Domestic and foreign companies plan to unveil cutting-edge digital innovation technologies, including AI, 6th generation (6G) mobile communications, and urban air traffic (UAM).
Domestic telecommunications companies are introducing technologies that combine telecommunications and AI. SK Telecom will set up a large exhibition hall measuring 992㎡ (approximately 300 pyeong) under the theme of ‘AI, which will be the beginning of a new change and an inflection point.’ SK Telecom has set its vision to become a global company rather than a simple telecommunications company. The key keyword for the exhibition was also set as ‘Telco Large Language Model (LLM)’. We plan to develop an LLM specialized for the telecommunications business and introduce cases of its application to various fields such as ‘virtual assistant’, ‘spam and smishing filtering system’, and ‘floating population analysis service’. In addition, plans under discussion at the Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA), a global telecommunications alliance that was officially launched in July of last year, will also be announced in detail. In addition, AI technologies used in daily life, such as ‘Xcalibur’, a pet AI diagnostic assistance service, and ‘AI Media Studio’, a content quality improvement platform, will also be showcased.
KT announced that it would organize the exhibition hall into two theme zones, ‘Next 5G (5G) Mobile Communications’ and ‘AI Life’, under the theme of ‘KT, the digital innovation partner creating the future’. The Next 5G Mobile Communication Zone introduces a UAM experience space and an intelligent traffic management system that safely manages UAM traffic using AI. In addition, in the AI Life Zone, KT will introduce an ‘AI context-tailored advertising service’ that can analyze advertising context and perform optimized targeting advertising through LLM, jointly researched and developed by KT with Nas Media.
LG U+ will not set up a separate exhibition hall, but plans to form an employee observation group, including CEO Hwang Hyun-sik, and discuss ways to cooperate with various partners such as Google, Amazon Web Services, and overseas telecommunications companies.
Microsoft Vice Chairman Brad Smith, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis, and Huawei Chairman Li Feng are scheduled to deliver keynote speeches.
