One person was killed and eight others were injured on Thursday in a shooting attack carried out by three Palestinians on a road linking an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank with Jerusalem, official sources said, amid a wave of violence in the area.

“A report was received of a terrorist gun attack on Highway 1” near Maale Adumim, an Israeli settlement located about 10 kilometers from Jerusalem, a police statement said.

According to the same official version, three Palestinians arrived in vehicles along Highway 1 in the direction of Jerusalem, and “began shooting with M-16 automatic weapons at civilians who were in their vehicles, in the midst of a traffic jam near the Azaim checkpoint.”

“Security forces neutralized two terrorists on the spot and, after conducting explorations, another terrorist who attempted to escape was located and neutralized,” the police statement said. Local press reported that two of the attackers died and that the other was arrested.

According to the same information, two of the attackers are brothers, aged 26 and 31 respectively and live in Belén. The remaining one is also 31 years old and lives in the same city.

Meanwhile, the United Hatzalah emergency service reported that one of the victims of the attack “died”, while the Magen David Adom paramedic service reported five gunshot wounds: a 23-year-old man in serious condition, two women of 23 year old and 30 year old and two 40 year old men in moderate to mild condition.

Last Friday, two people were killed and four others injured in a gun attack while at a bus station in southern Israel, while the attacker was killed by a civilian at the scene.

Israel and the occupied West Bank are experiencing the worst spiral of violence since the Second Intifada (2000-2005), a phenomenon that has worsened since the war broke out on 7 October between the Islamist group Hamas, which controls the Strip of Gaza, and Israel.

So far this year alone, 72 Palestinians have died in the area in violent events, as have seven people on the Israeli side.
