The war in Gaza: Joe Biden hopes that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas will come into force next Monday

US President Joe Biden has said he is hopeful the ceasefire agreement in the Israel-Hamas war which suspends hostilities and allows the release of hostages may come into force next Monday.

Asked when he expects the deal to be done, Biden responded: “I hope by the beginning of this weekend. At the end of the weekend. My national security advisor tells me they’re close. They are near. They aren’t done yet. My hope is that by next Monday we will have a ceasefire.”

Biden’s national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, had already advanced this Sunday in an interview with CNN that the United States, Israel, Egypt and Qatar They had reached an agreement on the “fundamental lines” facilitate the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

This morning the government of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) submitted his resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas amid internal disagreements over the management of the crisis caused by the war between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh announced, eliciting a positive reaction from the United States.

“I presented the government’s resignation to the president on February 20 and I present it in writing today,” said Shtayyeh, specifying that this decision came in light of “the facts related to the aggression against the Gaza Strip and the escalation in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

“The next phase requires new governmental and political measures that take into account the new reality in the Gaza Strip and the urgent need for an inter-Palestinian consensus“Shtayyeh urged in Ramallah.

For his part, Abbas accepted the resignation presented to him by Shtayyeh on behalf of the government.

“The president published a decree accepting this resignation and asked Mohammed Shtayyeh and his government to remain in office temporarily until a new government is formed,” the PA presidency said in a statement in the West, with headquartered in the city of Ramallah.
