Dune: Part Two arrived on Argentine billboards on Thursday and sat comfortably, if unbreakably, at the top of the weekend box office.
The second part of the film adaptation of the science fiction novel by Frank Herbert confirms the power of the new successes in the rooms. In recent times, extensive, spectacular (in the literal sense of the word) films with a certain artistic touch have triumphed.
If you haven’t seen 2020’s Dune, you should know that that movie ends in the answer media. It covers about 70% of the events of the first of Herbert’s six novels, while the second part completes the story of that book, albeit with some license.
What do you need to know about Dune to understand Dune: Part Two?
In the following video we summarize all the events of Part 1:
However. Let’s review, however, some key plot points from part 1 necessary to understand part 2. Watch out: there are spoilers.
- In the distant, distant future, House Atreides, led by Duke Leto, is tasked by the Emperor with caring for Arrakis, a planet also known as Dune.
- Leto moves to Arrakis with his son Paul and his wife Jessica, who is a Bene Gesserit. The Bene Gesserit are an order of women with physical and psychic powers above average humans.
- Arrakis is an inhospitable planet due to its desert climate. There’s spice melangethe most precious and powerful substance in the world, and live the Fremen, bitter enemies of the Empire and the Harkonnen.
- When the Atreides settle on Arrakis, they are ambushed by the Harkonnen (who are sent by the emperor so that the Atreides do not put their power into play).
- Leto is killed by Baron Harkonnen, who attempts to do the same to Paul and his mother, but they survive thanks to the help of their friends and are left adrift in the desert.
- Outdoors, Paul and Jessica find a group of Fremen and try to join the group. One of them, Jamis, challenges Paul to a duel as an initiation test to be accepted.
- Paul defeats Jamis and together with his mother accompanies the rest of the Fremen to his lair to plan revenge, free Arrakis from enemy hands and, consequently, make it prosperous.
- Paul, in turn, has visions and, according to an ancient local belief, he could be a sort of messiah of the Fremen people.
