There is a good part of a generation that grew up watching The Backyardigans and is in mourning today. Janice Burgessits creator, died Monday at the age of 72.
Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha and Austin They are names known to thousands of former children who spent entire afternoons having fun watching their adventures on television. It’s not the same with Janice.
Many times, those responsible for children’s programs like The Backyardigans are forgotten once they’re over. However, the impact of that program was so great that the sad news of its creator’s death went around the world.
The news was confirmed on the networks by Fracaswell HymanBurgess’ friend and former partner.
“I met Janice Burgess early in my career when I was the head writer on ‘GULLAH GULLAH ISLAND’ and she was assigned the role of executive producer. This is the person the network sends to the set to make sure the money doesn’t go to waste… I will miss her my dear friend. OH! how we laughed…” Hyman wrote.
Hyman did not reveal the cause of the writer’s death, nor did the Burgess family.
The Backyardigans
The American writer and producer joined Nickelodeon in 1995 as the executive in charge of Nick Jr. At that time she was responsible for the production of several shows aimed at preschool audiences, including The Backyardigans.
Burgess created the program in 2001, but his project was initially not approved. On the second attempt he got yes and that’s how the first 20 episodes arrived on the small screen in 2004.
Backyardigans had 80 episodes spread across four seasons of 20. It first premiered on Treehouse TV, in Canada, and then made its way to Nick Jr.
The series did not continue due to the decision of Burgess, who wanted to tackle new horizons.
