Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley drops out of the primary race.
On the 6th (local time), the Washington Post (WP) reported that on this morning, the day after ‘Super Tuesday’, former Ambassador Haley declared that she would withdraw from the 2024 US presidential election. Accordingly, former President Donald Trump was confirmed as the Republican presidential candidate.
In her resignation speech, former Ambassador Haley announced her withdrawal from the primary, saying, “I am grateful for the support so far,” and “But now it is time to stop the primary.”
“I have no regrets,” he said. “Although I am no longer a primary candidate, I will not stop speaking out about the direction our country should ultimately go.”
However, he did not express support for former President Trump. Former Ambassador Haley said, “Former U.S. President Donald Trump will be the Republican candidate and I congratulate him,” adding, “I have always supported Republican candidates, but it is up to Trump to gain the support of the party.” He also said, “It is now up to him whether he will get more votes than our party,” and “I hope he will.”
Former Ambassador Haley was former US President Donald Trump’s only competitor in this year’s Republican presidential primary. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Vivek Rawaswamy, and others resigned after the Iowa caucuses, the first primary.
Former Ambassador Haley lost a series of early primaries and failed to win in her home state of South Carolina. He won his first victory in Washington, D.C., which has a strong Democratic leaning, but it was not enough to break the stronghold of former President Donald Trump, who had gathered solid support mainly from hard-line conservatives.
He aimed for a final twist on Super Tuesday (the 5th), when Republican primaries are held simultaneously in 15 states. However, he lost to former President Trump by wide margins in every state except Vermont.
Former Ambassador Haley’s resignation confirmed a rematch in the US presidential election in November between Democratic candidate US President Joe Biden and Republican former President Donald Trump.
