“Would you like to become president of the United States?”, Donald Trump was asked when he was just 34 years old. Today, 43 years later and in the midst of a heated political context ahead of the elections, the response that the presidential candidate gave in that television interview has gone viral on X.

The video was uploaded by UHN Plus and in a very short time it reached tens of thousands of reproductions. At the time, Trump was in charge of his family’s real estate and construction business, which would later be renamed Trump Organization.

By 1981, the year the note was supposedly made, the president of the United States had ceased to be the Democrat Jimmy Carter and it became Ronald Reagan. The Republican held the position from January of that year until 1989.

In the middle of a conversation about current politics, the interviewer asked Trump if he would like to be president and Donald replied: “I really don’t think I will, Your Honor.”.

The cross question immediately came: “Why shouldn’t someone like you run for political office? You have all the money you could ever need. You have achieved a lot despite being only 34 years old.”

Because I think it’s a very bad life. “I would love to dedicate my life to this country, but I see it as a very bad life,” Trump responded.

The entrepreneur’s argument continues with his perception of politicians who win elections: “I see that someone with strong ideas, which may be a little unpopular, would not necessarily have a chance of being elected against someone without a big brain but with a big smile.”

Regarding the latter assessment, Trump blamed television: “Abraham Lincoln probably wouldn’t have been elected because of television.”

In that interview, Trump also said that “the most capable people don’t run for office” and that it is “a shame” that most “men” are “afraid of politics.”

Seven years later…

In 1988, when Reagan was still president, Trump visited the program Oprah Winfrey and answered the same question.

“Would you like to do it?”the presenter asked him, to which he replied: “Probably not”. “Why not?” Winfrey asked, and Donald replied, “I just don’t feel like doing it. “I love what I’m doing.”

However, Trump later recanted his argument, stating that “I would never rule it out completely.”: “Probably not, but I get tired of seeing what’s happening to this country. “I would never rule it out completely because I’m really tired of seeing how we are, how we’re making other people live like kings.”

It should be remembered that Trump was elected President of the United States and held that office from January 20, 2017 to January 20, 2021. He will now run for a second term in the presidential elections in November this year.
