Origin of the flat white

The flat white originated in Melbourne, Australia, and Wellington, New Zealand. It occurred especially after the arrival of a significant immigration of Italians after the Second World War and the introduction of espresso machines in the 1950s.​

According to legend, flat white began to be prepared in Italian cafés where cappuccino was the most popular type of coffee. In fact, one of the theories indicates that its origin derives from a failed attempt to prepare a cappuccino in a place in Wellington.
