The Republican governor of Oklahoma, (3) in the south-central United States, announced Tuesday that he has signed a state law limiting abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, one of the most restrictive laws in the country.
“I want Oklahoma to be the most pro-life state in the country because I represent Oklahoma’s 4 million people who overwhelmingly want to protect the unborn,” Kevin Stitt said on his official Twitter account.
The initiative bans abortion after six weeks except in medical emergencies, but not for rape or incest.
Stitt’s announcement, Roe v. Wade secured the nationwide right to abortion in 1973.
If the Supreme Court upholds this ruling, it will put abortion-related laws in the hands of state legislatures, and half the country’s states are expected to ban or impose new restrictions.
For many women, the possible revocation of abortion rights in parts of the United States raises the possibility that they will be forced to travel hundreds of miles to access the procedure or to give birth in traumatic conditions.
For years, Republicans like Stitt’s Roe v. Wade, something that seemed inevitable after former President Donald Trump’s appointment of three conservative judges has shifted the Supreme Court’s balance to the right.
