Russia vs Ukraine: Azovstal occupation on day 69 and new criticisms of Putin

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venicetova said on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is the “chief war criminal of the 21st century”. Today, Russia’s invasion of the country completes 69 days.

Mariupol

Russian soldiers launched an offensive today against the Azovstal complex, a steelworks in Mariupol, where the last stronghold of the Ukrainian resistance is located.

The head of the patrol police department in Mariupol, Mykhailo Vershinin, said Russian forces “raid the factory in several places”. The attacks were also confirmed by Russia.

On Sunday, nearly a hundred civilians were evacuated from the facility in an action coordinated by the UN. The evacuated group arrived in Zaporizhzhia this afternoon.

Mariupol mayor Vadym Boichenko said at least 200 civilians took shelter at the factory. He also announced that two women died during the bombings on the steel mill this morning.

Also today, Ukrainian officials noted:

  • At least ten people were killed and 15 injured as a result of the Russian bombing of a factory in Avdiivka;
  • At Lyman, at least three people were attacked by the Russians while they were fetching water;
  • A 15-year-old teenager died in Odessa, who was trying to save his elderly neighbors from an airstrike.
