Election commission results on Monday showed President Vladimir Putin secured a fifth term in office with a landslide, in an election that had little suspense after the harsher repression against the opposition and freedom of expression since Soviet times.
Russia’s Central Election Commission said Monday that, with nearly 100% of all electoral districts counted, Putin won 87.29% of the vote. The head of the Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, said that almost 76 million voters voted for Putin, the highest number of votes to date.
After dealing only symbolic rivals and harshly suppress opposition voices, Putin was willing to extend his nearly quarter-century rule for another six years. Even with little space to protest, Russians crowded outside polling stations at noon Sunday, the final day of the election, apparently heeding a call from the opposition to express their displeasure with the president.
