What is toxic shock syndrome?

Specifically, toxic shock syndrome is one in which bacteria spread into deep tissues and the blood. It is not yet clear how it enters the body, but it is believed to occur through cuts in the skin or through the mucous membranes.

Another disturbing fact about what is happening in Japan is that specialists have not yet identified why the rare bacterium sometimes becomes fulminant.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of strep infections may include fever, rash, peeling skin, and low blood pressure. There may also be symptoms related to the specific underlying infection, such as mastitis, osteomyelitis, necrotizing fasciitis, or pneumonia.

If strep reaches the bloodstream, muscles, and lungs, symptoms can quickly worsen and cause low blood pressure, multiple organ failure, and even death.
