Brazil, record number of feminicides
Brazil recorded an average of four femicides per day in 2023, or a record 1,463, indicates a study published two weeks ago.
According to data collected by the Brazilian NGO Forum of Public Security (FBSP) based on police records, this number represents an increase of 1.6% compared to 2022.
Data on femicides began to be collected in 2015, when a Brazilian law defined femicide as the death of a woman “caused by domestic or family violence due to her status” as a woman. In total, in this country of 203 million inhabitants, between 2015 and 2023, 10,655 women were victims of this type of crime.
“We cannot normalize the deaths of more than 10,000 women killed in less than a decade for the simple fact of being women,” Samira Bueno, director of the FBSP, lamented in a statement. “The issue has been widely debated by civil society, but this is not enough to encourage the reduction of these crimes that are committed daily in the country”, she added.
