The Department of Justice announced this on Thursday a wide-ranging antitrust lawsuit against Appleaccusing the tech giant of engineer an illegal monopoly on smartphones which excludes competitors and stifles innovation.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New Jersey, alleges that Apple has monopoly power in the smartphone market and uses its control over the iPhone to “engage in extensive, sustained and unlawful conduct.”
The question, which also was presented to 16 state attorneys general, It’s the latest example of the Justice Department’s approach aggressive enforcement of federal antitrust law which, according to officials, aims to ensure a fair and competitive market.
President Joe Biden has called on the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to aggressively enforce antitrust statutes. Greater scrutiny of corporate mergers and trade deals has met resistance from some business leaders who have said the Democratic administration is overreaching, but others have praised it as long overdue.
