Netflix pulled off one of the deals of the year: it agreed Warner Bros. the distribution of one of its most popular series: Sex and the city (Sex in the city). From April 1st, the platform offers its subscribers the 94 episodes of Darren Star’s comedy which marked a before and after on television.
Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson; Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere; Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. In Hollywood, stars that you don’t even see often coexist. The cast of Sex and the City is no different: Sarah Jessica Parker AND Kim Cattralltwo of its protagonists, fiercely disagree.
The series did so well that its four protagonists got the nickname superstar. Parker, Cattrall, Charlotte York AND Miranda Hobbes They made their characters unforgettable, Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis AND Cynthia Nixonrespectively.
The four appear in the six seasons (1998-2004) and in the two existing films about the series, from 2008 and 2010, but not in the first season of That’s it… the Sex and the City sequel premiering on HBO Max in 2021.
In that series, with the exception of a brief cameo by Kim in season 2, all of the “girls” except Cattrall appear.
Oh, and there wasn’t even Sex and the City 3 because of Samantha Jones… Why?
The first meetings
Cattrall and Parker haven’t gotten along for years..
As much as “SJP” claims there is “no argument” between her and her co-star, there is evidence that their relationship is rotten.
Cattrall’s initially confused attitude at the 2004 Emmys, when Parker, York and Hobbes sat at one table and she at another, has been understood as time has passed. Kim has made countless statements to the media criticizing her ex-boyfriend.
The first clashes were over money.
Although Sex and the City was outwardly an ensemble story, the star, without a doubt, was Carrie. The character’s preponderance meant there was a gap between Parker’s salary and that of the rest of her colleagues. The difference between how much one earned and the other was astronomical..
That distance widened when Parker became a producer on season three and executive producer on season four. The actress earned $300,000 per episode.
Kim expressed her anger at earning less than her partner during her visit Friday night with Jonathan Rossin 2008, stating that salary was one of the causes of the series’ demise.
In fact, when Sex and the City stopped airing, the 67-year-old actress reportedly said that if one day she missed her former colleagues, she would put an episode of the series on TV and that’s it, issue resolved (especially now that on Netflix).
A cinematic conflict
Much to Cattrall’s chagrin, two films would reunite the four leads after the show ended in 2004.
The first, released in 2008, delayed production because Kim wanted to charge more. He had nothing to lose since his idea of him had never been to participate in a feature film of this style.
On the set of the sequel, Parker and Cattrall did not speak to each other.. The air in the set to It was cut with a knife.
In 2017, when Warner Bros. wanted to make a third film, Kim said he would only act if the studio cast more of his projects. Ultimately, when there was no agreement, the actress sued Warner and refused to participate.
The reasons for his refusal, however, were clarified by the person himself, who at the time had tweeted: “My only request was not to make a third film… and that was in 2016“.
In the same context, Cattrall declared that she and Sarah had never been friends and, while she was at it, she dropped a bomb: interviewed by Pier Morgan she said that Parker “it could have been nicer” with her during filming.
“It bothers me to be considered the bad guy: I’ve never asked for more money, I’m not a diva,” launched Cattrall without any filter.
The fatal blow
The shot of stun It would come a year later, in 2018, when Cattrall’s brother died.
After hearing the sad news, Parker expressed his condolences to his ex-partner and the actress didn’t like it at all. She found the gesture so hostile that she published a post with the following rebuke: “I don’t need your support or your love, Sarah Jessica Parker”.
In the description of the post, Kim adds: “My mom asked me today ‘When will @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?'”
And he completes: “Your continued contact is a painful reminder of how truly cruel you were then and now. I would like to make this very clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. “So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy to restore your ‘good girl’ personality.”
SJP’s Right to Reply
Parker delved into the topic in an article for The Hollywood Reporter. She only did it in 2022.
In that interview, the 59-year-old actress touched on her ex-partner, noting that over the years the public has only heard one side’s version.
He said it about them”It wasn’t a catfight.” and that Cattrall’s absence from the truncated 2017 film “disappointed” her.
Parker defended herself against Kim’s statements that made her seem like a bad partner: “I spent many years working very hard to always be honest with everyone on set, to care about people, to be responsible with and for people, both with my bosses as those with whom I feel responsible as a producer of the show. And there’s no one else who’s ever talked about me like that.”.
“I have never uttered fighting words in my life towards anyone I have worked with, ever. There is no struggle. There have been no public controversies or accusations made by me or anyone else on my behalf. “I wouldn’t do it,” she concluded.
A new opportunity?
The arrival of And Just Like That… in 2021 has called into question the terrible relationship between the two. Although Cattrall is not involved in the show, he makes a cameo in the second season. Huge progress considering his history with Parker and the rest of the actresses.
AJLT is the first post-Sex and the City project in which the four protagonists are not involved. The story, like “SATC,” closely follows famous people as they reach their 50s.
The surprising thing is that HBO production managed to convince Cattrall to soften up and finally film a scene for the episodes arriving on Max on June 22, 2023. In it, Samantha talks on the phone with Carrie.
According to Variety, the dialogue was filmed so that Kim wouldn’t have to cross paths with any of the cast.
Their disagreements prove that we will likely never see another season of Sex and the City. Cattrall’s refusal to participate in a new film about the series and her strict requirements to make a cameo in And Just Like That… make the idea of that project completely unfeasible.
For those who are missing the entire team, Netflix has already done its homework.
