“It’s an outrage, it’s against the rules, it can’t be”, shouts Roberto Canseco as he gets up from the ground after arguing with the Ecuadorian police. The head of the Mexican consular section in Quito was involved in a fierce clash with troops who forcibly entered the embassy to take away former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, who had been granted political asylum there since December.
The tense images were filmed in videos which immediately went viral on social networks, and it was Canseco himself who spoke to the press as soon as the violent episode occurred in which he wanted to intercede with the agents to prevent them from transferring Glass. Visibly moved by the situation, he addressed the microphones expressing concern for the former vice president’s health.
“They hit me on the ground, I physically tried to prevent them from entering. Like criminals they broke into the embassy. This is not possible, it cannot be. “He’s crazy,” he yelled while looking agitated.
Asked if the former Ecuadorian vice president had been arrested, he replied: “I understand. I’m very worried because they can kill him. There is no basis for doing so. They do it because he is persecuted, today we were able to confirm this.”
“I am totally defenseless against this group, it can’t be, this didn’t happen even in the worst cases,” he added.
Finally, he referred to the moment the police officers burst in: “We were about to go out and we meet cops, we meet thieves who entered the Embassy at night”.
