Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to “rescue” the injured trapped at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, in the southeast of the country. The site became a haven for the last remaining insurgents of the Russian occupation in the city.
Speaking to Guterres on the phone, Zelensky said, “The people there are in danger of life. We ask you to help us to save them,” and stressed the need to “help the evacuation of all the injured in Azovstal.”
Yesterday, the UN announced the “successful” evacuation of 101 civilians trapped in the industrial complex for weeks. According to the organization, the operation began last Friday (29).
“I am happy and relieved to confirm that 101 civilians have been successfully evacuated from the Azovstal metallurgical plant in Mariupol,” United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine Osnat Lubrani said in a statement.
Russia attacked the railways, citing weapons
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a report released today that it attacked railways in Ukraine. According to the Russians, the attacked points “of the group of Ukrainian troops in the Donbass [área separatista no leste] It was supplied with weapons and ammunition manufactured in the United States and European countries”.
Eastern Ukraine is currently the main Russian focal point of the war. Ukraine’s railway company confirmed attacks on six stations in central and western Ukraine last night. Russia attacked the power supply areas, knocking out the stations.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that “any transport arriving with weapons or supplies for the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is considered by us a legitimate target of destruction” from the United States and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) countries. Russia also announced that it has carried out more attacks than a submarine.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that the attacks took place in the transport sector, without specifying whether the attacked areas were used to transport weapons.
The enemy launched missiles at facilities in the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Lviv, Vinnitsa, Kyiv, Zakarpattia, Odessa and Donetsk to destroy Ukraine’s transport infrastructure.
