The images are terrible and were recorded in the midst of the terror caused by the attack on the Bondi shopping center in Sydney, where a person armed with a knife stabbed and killed at least six people, including a newborn baby. A man, barely brandishing a bollard, those poles used to create queues at cinemas and airports, faced the terrorist on an escalator and managed to stop his advance and thus prevent the massacre from becoming even worse.

The man, wearing a white t-shirt and jeans, was described on social media as “bravery personified”, “an absolute hero”, “a divine legend” and deserving of a medal of the Order of Australia.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the attacker entered the popular Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center at 3.10pm local time, left shortly after and returned around ten minutes later when he was confronted by “around nine people”.

A police inspector confronted the attacker, who turned toward her with a knife in his hand, then the officer “shot him with a firearm,” according to Cooke’s account.

According to a police statement, the officer performed CPR on the suspect while medical personnel arrived, but they were unable to revive him.

According to the ABC, the New South Wales Ambulance Service said there were at least seven people stabbed, including a nine-month-old baby, and they were transferred to the nearest hospitals.

It is unclear whether these seven people include the six deceased.

No details about the criminals or their possible motives have been released at this time.

According to Australian media, hundreds of people were evacuated from the mall after the attack, while images on social media showed people hastily leaving the scene as police vehicles and ambulances arrived.
