The Finnish Ministry of Defense announced that a Russian military helicopter violated Finnish airspace on Wednesday, in the context of the country’s possible candidate for NATO membership.
“The device was a Mi-17 helicopter and the depth of the alleged breach was between four and five kilometers,” a spokesperson told AFP.
According to the ministry, Helsinki reported that a Russian plane had entered its airspace for the second time in a month amid war-related tensions in Ukraine.
On April 8, a civilian transport plane belonging to the Russian army briefly entered Finnish airspace.
Analysts warn of possible Russian intimidation maneuvers against Finland and Sweden, two countries considering joining NATO to better protect themselves from Moscow.
Four Russian warplanes breached Swedish airspace on the strategic island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea in early March. Last Friday, a Russian reconnaissance plane also crossed the air border near a naval base in the south of the country.
